Far East Supports World’s First Megawatt Urban Airborne Wind System

Far East Cable has participated in the successful deployment of the world’s first S2000 megawatt airborne wind power system for urban environments. The system was recently flown to an altitude of 2,000 meters, completing grid-connected power generation tests and marking a new stage in the urban application of high-altitude wind energy.

Compared with the previous S1500 system, the S2000 sets new industry benchmarks in four areas: flight altitude, power output, grid-connected testing, and application scenarioses. This demanded higher performance from the supporting power cables: longer transmission distance, greater environmental resistance, and reliable structural and electrical safety in complex urban settings.

Far East Cable provided a custom cable solution for high-altitude tethering and high-power transmission. Designed to withstand extreme conditions at 2,000 meters—including temperature extremes, rain, snow, ice, strong radiation, and continuous motion—the cable efficiently transmits 10kV power while meeting requirements for tensile strength, lightweight design, and high insulation. Through material innovation and structural optimization, FarEast limited transmission loss to under 5% and weight to below 0.2 kg/m, ensuring efficient and stable power transmission as the system’s reliable “energy lifeline.”

Both power conductors in the tether were supplied by Far East.

The successful test flight of the S2000 represents a major expansion of high-altitude wind energy applications—moving from remote deserts to urban landscapes. By leveraging stable wind zones created by urban heat island effects, it overcomes stability and safety challenges in cities, offering a new green technology path for distributed energy, urban emergency power supply, and off-grid energy solutions.

Every leap in energy technology relies on collaborative innovation and strong support across the industry chain. With over 40 years of expertise, Far East continues to advance R&D in line with national energy strategies and the development of new quality productive forces. Through timely, high-performance products and services, we are committed to supporting the global transition to cleaner energy and contributing to an integrated “air-ground-space” energy ecosystem.
